On Sunday December 14 2003, CSB hosted the first gathering ever of blind observant Jews seeking access to the Torah. Over fifty people - blind men and women, several parents of blind children, an array of teachers of the visually impaired, Braille transcriptionists, and representatives from JBI International, attended the meeting at Shaarei Tova Synagogue in Kew Gardens, New York.  Despite the snow and rain, the event was a great success.

Michael Levy chaired the meeting and inspired everyone by saying "Look at how much brighter the light of Torah is shining in the span of one year."  The meeting commenced with everyone introducing themselves, explaining why they had come, and what services or products they needed.

Nachum Lehman, executive director of CSB, then demonstrated the CSB Metsudah Chumash with voice recognition.  He also detailed some of the projects CSB is currently developing.

Pearl Lamm, head of library operations for JBI International, expounded upon JBI efforts to produce more Hebrew Braille than ever.  The meeting was highlighted by an hour long question and answer session.  Everyone had a chance to discuss their Torah needs, their experiences with technology, and their desire to keep this new avenue of communication within the blind community alive.  Computers, Braille displays, and headsets were available for testing and demonstrations.

CSB is proud to announce that the communication is continuing in many forms.  Several requests for Braille material have been fulfilled by one of the attendees who performs Braille embossing for CSB.  A new list serve - hosted by CSB - has begun for the religious blind community to discuss project development, share success stories, and keep everyone up to date all the time.

CSB hopes to arrange another meeting sometime in 2004.  Check our website regularly for news about this and other upcoming events.
